WELCOME to "Don't Duck the Issue" 2009
Swimmers and paddlers will take to the welcoming waters of Lake Windermere on the 3rd of October to support Lancaster and District YMCA's homeless prevention work. The event follows the success of the 2007 and 2008 campaigns. A strong team of swimmers will complete a 1.5km course around the bay at YMCA Lakeside's South Camp, with the aim of rescuing giant rubber ducks along the way. There'll also be teams of paddlers taking to the waters in the second DDTI Boat Race which is set to see a number of teams from community and commercial groups go head to head in a fun (and no doubt wet for some) event.
Lancaster and District YMCA's effort has the twin objectives of raising money for their ongoing youth homeless prevention projects and raising awareness of Homelessness as a burning community issue. The ducks that will be rescued from Lake Windermere during the day, represent an estimated 120 young people dealing with homelessness in the Lancaster District. Participants and supporters are invited to raise sponsorships and donations on a per duck basis.
The event this year will form part of the Lancaster and District YMCA "Duck-athalon" which will include a half marathon, Windermere swim and boat race, duck race and Cycle Ride.
Our website www.dontducktheissue.org.uk will be updated throughout the coming months to update everyone on the progress of ‘Team Duck'.
